Glacier Queens

A few weeks ago, I received two Glacier Kings. This is my story.

The Kings were a blast to paint but not the best to put together - who knew? After playing about 10 games with them I now feel it's time to discuss them properly.

I have been running them with Doomy3. Mainly for the point reduction and feat. 16 points of ice seems legit. My first three games with them came at a local event. The 16 point steamroller went reasonably well. Paired with Runes, I came third and only lost on scenario after getting my opponents caster down to 1 wound.

The Kings were glorious in the first game against pigs. Running 16 inches first turn due to the tier benefit and Rush was bonkers. The feat made them unkillable the next turn and I removed any threats. 5-0 to me.

Then came cryx. I knew going into the event that this would be a problem. Cryx like to munch on armour. Armour was all I was bringing. The game started well for me, I got up the table and began scoring/ piece trading. I didn't go for the assassination until turn 4 - a costly mistake. However, the biggest mistake was stupidly activating one King and advancing out of Doomy's control. If I had been able to boost I think I would have killed the caster. Instead, I left him on one and he won 5-3 on incursion.

Then came the glorious moment where I assassinated a caster top of two with trolls. With ret, this was a common plan, but in trolls I have looked for the long game. To put it simply, my opponent didn't realise the Kings had rate of fire three. Abby died after one King had activated.

So that was my first event with them. They did well, were fun and great to see on the table. I have since played a few more games and used them in a mangled metal event yesterday. Yesterday didn't go too well but I had fun and learnt a lot.

So, here is the thing about the Kings and Doomy3. You will catch people out win ROF 3. You will feel great feat turn. You will kill jacks and beasts with ease once you get to them. But, and it's a big but, their relatively low wound count and def 9 mean they can be easily killed after feat. Not only that, but having two means you don't have much of a screen or other pieces to continue the fight once one is removed. Doomy3 also seems to struggle late game if your opponent has been wise and not fed you his army. In short, with the way the meta currently looks to deal with armour (thanks MMM) I  think they will need some rethinking. Maybe they need Gunnbjorn.

I loved painting them. I'm happy to see them on the table. They are so, so much better than the Mountain King. For now at least I will give them Christmas off. Doomy3 will also have an Xmas break to rest his weary head.

Next, I feel Calandra, croaks and the knot need to be tested. Puppet stringed Croak raiders under her feat sound OK don't they?

A little long in the Carnivean tooth

Greetings one and all,
I'm Rodders and have been playing Warmachine/Hordes for nigh on 10 years now. I started waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay in mk1 back not long after Hordes was first released. I never liked the look of Warjacks at first and played the game with 2 other friends at a local gaming club who sold it to me as "like wrestling with giant steam robots".  After a game of battlebox mangled metal I was initially put off the game and thought it lacked strategy (oh how wrong was I?). I paid a visit to another reasonably local club with my best mate Dave (we all have a mate called Dave right?) and saw Hordes being rolled out for the first time and Warmachine played with units and thought to myself "Now I see this game has legs". I bought the Legion Battle Box and a Nephlim Soldier The next day and was hooked from then on playing solely Legion thoughout the entirety of mk1.

Most of my play up until the release of mk2 was friendly play with stuff we liked the look of rather than things that have good synergies. However Since mk2  I have played in a more competitive manner along with dabbling in a bit of Retribution of Scyah, Cryx and Khador for a time but am now faction monogamous with my first love Legion (for now).

Expect to see some painting articles from me as I'm currently repainting all the Legion I own which is a lot. There will also be musings on tournaments and list building.

Dirt mystics, werewolves and movement shenanigans!

Hey all! My name is Aaron, and I have played warmachine for about four years now and have been a pressganger for about three. I started with Cryx, then rotated to trolls and have settled on circle orobos. I have played only circle Orobos for about 3 years and have literally just purchased (this month) a Haley1/2, Brisbaine and Caine2 list for my self. Just to see if guns are any good or not eh? My Circle Orobos range is fully painted with the help of Fanplastic Little Men, a fantastic painting service! My cygnar will be painted by myself and I'll keep you all updated with how that goes!

In regards to the game of warmachine the reason I play more so then anything else is the amazing friends I have gained (and writing this blog with) throughout playing it. We have the best banter, trash talk and very late nights in the bar at all events we go to and without them I wouldn't bother traveling for over night events. That being said as I do go far and wide for events, I am there to play tight competitive games. This year I have been practicing a lot, I have won some local events and most recently went 4-1 on the first steamroller at the UK Games expo and qualified for the masters. Next year I plan to attend smogcon (I will be running events here) UK, Irish and Welsh nationals as well lots of local events and hope to get podium spots!

I'll be speaking about the events we attend, Circle Orobos as a faction, Hobby and the current tournament meta: how and when it changes!

Cheese for reading my little part, hope to see you all back soon.
