..overcoming Faction Purity in the cold light of day.

I'd start with an apology of sorts, for my absolute lack of updates on Imperishable Dominion for the past few months, but for the simple fact that I doubt any of our readership missed me. I'm nowhere near pretentious enough to consider otherwise. Nonetheless, there it is. For those of you new to the blog, an introduction. My name is Sherwin, and I play Skorne; nope, that's Convergence; wait, that should be Minions. Or Convergence.

Maybe both.

Time now for a boring personal history lesson, and then a guy taking himself waaay too seriously

I've played Skorne since the inception of Mk.II, back just after the field tests, and they were the first Hordes faction to receive a 'Forces of..' release. Back then, our local area didn't have a Warmachine scene at all, beyond a couple of older gamers whom had tried starting up at some point and given up due to lack of both store and gamer support.

My first Warlock was Tyrant Xerxis, for whom I dutifully made the obligatory Tier 2 Fist list after a handful of psuedo-battlebox games (to this day I've only ever used the actual Skorne battlebox for a game around three times); after that as our scene began to flourish, I continued to play with the Skorne. I am without doubt in the camp of those fiercely dedicated players that champions a single faction above all others, and comes to identify with them in the local meta.

I enjoyed moderate success at a local level with the Skorne, and even some success at a national one (although of course, no titles), placing fairly respectably with them. But I found that whenever I would try my hand at an alternative faction, I'd reach about four games in at most before simply shaking my head, putting the models back in the case, and reaching for the Master Race once again. Any other faction just couldn't sway me from my first Warmachine love.

 This guy changed it all

But then finally I became mechanized. Around six months after their release, a friend was selling off his Convergence of Cyriss models, which I duly came into possession of. I thought that they'd be an interesting painting project and then I'd sell them on eBay. What actually happened was that I fell in love with the first model I painted, a Cipher. Something about the aesthetic just appealed I guess. That afternoon, I vowed that I would use the models I had for games, and that I wouldn't touch the Skorne for a whole year, thus avoiding the typical circumstance of returning back to my beloved Titans after a handful of games.

Playing Convergence was a massive eye opener, and something which I can absolutely attest to being the moment that my game stepped up to the next level, whether it be list construction, strategy, understanding of the core mechanics, or of tournament play. I couldn't say whether that was down to the faction or not - certainly there was initially a frontier feel to them back then, with only three Warcasters, no Corollary, Enigma Foundry, second heavy jack chassis, or battle engine. Perhaps that restriction focused me, perhaps not.

I returned to Skorne after Smogcon 2015, as promised. And, as you'd expect had a great time during the honeymoon period. I came to dominate the local meta with Xerxis2 paired with Zaal1. But for all that I was enjoying my games, I found the same unease that had begun to creep in during the latter part of my first run with the Skorne. Everything was the same. Very little had changed. Granted, the Aradus provided something a little different, but not a dynamic alteration. The faction felt stale.

Enter the Minions. I'd owned a growing horde of both pacts for years, as allies for the Skorne, and then as painting projects, and always sworn that I would try them for a decent run. They became my new Convergence, starting so far with Thornfall.

And, for those of you still reading, here's the point of the article, the discussion.

Having a new faction to test expands your gaming horizons, and keeps the game fresh. Learning the synergy of a new faction or how the interactions between new models and abilities work is the best way to force you out of old habits, and keep you evolving. Playing Convergence certainly taught me that very quickly, as have the Farrow. But the flipside is that initially at least, you have to reset the learning curve. And for some, that's the killer.

I love the Thornfall Alliance models. Each of them has so much character, and is so thoroughly engaging to paint, even down to the lowliest grunt. They are, without doubt one of the best examples of how Privateer Press have taken a fantasy trope, mixed it around a little and made it their own. But every game is a struggle; they're deliberately balanced as being difficult. Players using Minions don't expect or even hope to win events. That some do is tribute to their ability of course, and once the new Light Warbeasts arrive, things will change. But by taking a Minion army, you are significantly putting yourself at disadvantage to the other players.

For the moment therefore, I've been forced to ask myself the question of how much I want to win. That sounds absurd to write, but I believe that its a question at the heart of all of us, the elephant in the room that few of us like to address directly. In a meta which looks down on 'powergaming' or those too invested in their games are decried as tryhards, at what point do you look at yourself and admit that you are using the best options available to you, because crucial to your enjoyment is victory?

For me at least, its a tough one to realise. I've always championed love for the game itself, and the models over the rules; I've never once fielded a list based upon what I read online or saw that did well somewhere else. I even stopped using the Fist after I came to the conclusion that it was fast becoming so commonplace once the Incindiarii were released. But losing with Minions has taught me that luxury is simply not one that I have with my new faction.

Our in house artists impression of how the war for my faction purity was lost

And that's why I have at last overcome my faction purity, and broken free of what feels like the last hurdle in that step up which began with playing Convergence. I am a Convergence player, and a Minion player. Because, for better or worse, I am too emotionally invested in my games to not be it seems, to have one faction for events and when I want to win, and one for when I just want to play random games - or, until they get a release that brings them up to a standard which makes me feel more confident of success.

I'll just have to live with that I guess.

Smogcon from a Minions Perspective

The dust has settled, sleep has been caught up with and the Rot has dissipated... its time to talk Minions, and how they survived Smogcon!

With selling my Legion it left me with Pigs and Gators, both in hefty bags so i only wanted to take one force which had to be Pigs hehe.

I hadn't signed up to any tourneys and just wanted to play in the Iron Arena all wkend, lots of games and very little sleep meant i had ton plan on playing our Lord Carver most games irrespective of the opposition as he is the most straight forward and forgiving of the line up:

Carver is the boss, pretty hard, survivable and brings a stack of buffs to polish the turd that is the farrow army. My list for the wkend was as follows:

Lord Carver +6
- War Hog 8
- Road Hog 9
- Gun Boar 5
Max Brigands w/Warlord 11
Max Brigands w/Warlord 11
Slaughterhousers 6
Effarit Scouts 3
Effarit Scouts 3

I came away with 2 wins and a loss with this list and its probably my preferred way to play Carver until May. In my last game of the wkend i swapped out a Brigands w/Warlord for a Meat Thresher and Maximus to face eGrimm. I had great success with that version which is now 5-0 in all events haha.

I wanted to get some games in with Dr Arkadius and his Nature of the Beast list which is on paper, the strongest list in the Alliance (Till May!) and i managed a win against Lylyth2 and a loss vs Rask. I also played the old Mad science Tier against Ossyan borrowing a few of Sherwins War Hogs to live the dream of 7 big Hogs at tier 4 mwhahahahahahahahahahahaha

All in all it was a great wkend and its made me even more dedicated to my true love of the Farrow and im looking forward to the challanges ahead and how the Battle Boar and Splatter Boar will be mixing up my lists in the coming year.

What a difference a day makes - Devastation and the Thornfall Alliance

Thursday 1st of October and the Thornfall Alliance is downcast and grumbling with only the Warlord spoiled so far and he is "Situational" at best and terrible at worst; over costed, over abundance of conflicting abilities and over here... All is not well.

Friday 2nd of October and all hell has broken loose! Chain Attack have an early copy of the book and have posted up a fair few spoilers about upcoming releases, some are good, some are great and some are amazing... but as a primarily Farrow player i don't really give a stuff about the other bits haha.

Thankfully PP has seen fit to provide the Alliance with several awesome new tools of warfare to crush the armies of man:

The Battle Boar

First mentioned in Helga's fluff story i believe, its stats are identical to its cousin the gunboar, but this brute has lost the cannon and gained rabid(!) and snacking as an animus.. oh and its a point cheaper to boot!

This is a big deal, this beast provides the alliance with a solid platform of cheap, melee light beast that the many and varied buffs available in faction can bring:

  • Lord Carver: Where to start haha; Mobility for SPD9 with Rabid, Batten down the hatches for ARM20, Quagmire for effective MAT7, the feat for 4D6 damage rolls. With Carver i plan to treat them like Heavy infantry and run a pack of 4/5 of them and smash into my opps lines with ease.
  • Golden Horde Tier: Again Lord Carver but the T4 benefit of advance move on battlegroup means that going first you can be knocking on your opponents AD line - 7"Deploy + 5" AM + 18" Run/Rabid/Mobility. Also in this tier is cheaper lights for Rorsh but this is not the one for him...
  • Dr Arkadius: The usual benefits of Forced Evolution and Crippling Grasp with the crazy feat for some silly movement.
  • Mad Science: Doc's old tier is still a fav of mine, and remember what the BBoar can do with Golden Horde, well look at Mad Science for some speed: 7"Deploy  + 18" Run/Rabid/SPD + 12" Feat Charge to get into the opps deployment zone on turn 1... unlikely but possible haha
  • Nature of the Beast: Ive not played this enough to decide if the beast is better than losing the free Razorboar, only time will tell on this.
  • Midas brings calamity and his tier allows masses of bonegrinders and a dead beast for them to start spaming an animus... not this guys but the next beast hehe
  • Sturm n Drang are beast casters through and through so; Drang bringing the amazing combo of Pack Hunters/Goad/Killing ground for +2MAT, free charges and extra movement!
  • Helga: The First Lady of Pigdom brings us Gang fighter for extra hitting power, and her funky slam time feat for more shenanigans. Helga's armies often feature a lot of slaughterhousers as she doesnt do much for brigands and reach gives more flexibility on the feat. The BBoars will love the abundance of reach infantry to trigger gang fighter haha.

The Splatter Boar

A total new one for us, a giant piggy Assault Kommando with a mortar strapped to its back hahaha whats not to like! Gun Boar stats with a different ammo type gun as listed above.

It could be argued that this gun brings to the Alliance what Rask's brings to the luggage crew; Corrosion bombs for murdering chaff, fire for hardier targets and triggering the prowl on the Warlord(!) but his best is the psycho gas...

Hit your own troops who will largely be fearless and get the enemy to run away, or better yet hit your own beasts for a frenzy move... Farrow now have fury management!!!!! Outside of Dr A's feat we have a way to relatively reliably deal with an epic turn of destiny and not pay the piper for it in the next turn.

Midas and Helga love this guy, Midas in tier has a good spamable animus for all his bonegrinders to dish out and |Helga has a powerful gun to make use of her slams.

Sturm n Drang love this guy as he can provide a cloud for them to hide in/behind and shield their medium base asses from enemy fire.

Carver loves this guy for further increasing the damage output of his new Battle Boar brute squad and could attach one to Rorsh to provide cheap covering fire and fury management without taxing him.

Dr A loves him in Mad science for sure, but again is he worth losing a free razor boar in Nature????

Lynus Wesselbaum & Ebrea Lloryrr (Minion Character Unit)

Pendrake's assistants from the Novella are now gracing a tabletop near you! Less useful than the pig beasts but still having something to offer the Alliance, Collaboration  provides another way to buff the spell warded Maximus and trying to avoid that critical miss on his first attack roll derp.

Ebrea can bring an extra magical attack to use against those dastardly incorps or Paladins etc, and her wind barrier brings shooting protection to the unit which makes them pretty tenacious compared to their 14/12 stats would suggest.

So there we have it, an old Farrow generals outlook on our newest recruits... i cant wait for the releases and to start terrorizing the local tournament scene... who knows, if they are out by smogcon you WILL see them in the Pit!!!!!!

Everyone has that special someone...

As the title says, every Warmachine player has that one Warcaster or Warlock that they just click with... they suit their play style to a tee, they enable you to get the most out of your army and are a really cool model to boot!

Mine is this chap:

Lord Carver Esq III, Bringer of Most Massive Destruction

Lord Carver is the warnoun I have used in more games than all the others combined, from every faction I have played by a long shot. He is the real deal Evander Holyfield style, Mohamed i'm hard Bruce Lee to the face... He takes the Thornfall Alliance by the short n curlys and drags them up to a playable state all on his own.

Carvers combination of raw stats, abilities and spells turns your sorry bunch of chumps into a mean baconating fighting machine:

  • He makes your stuff more accurate with Quagmire and CRA on the Brigands
  • He makes your stuff hit harder with the feat
  • He makes your boys not scared of the monsters with Inspiration
  • He makes your beasts faster with Mobility
  • He makes your beasts tougher with Batten down the Hatches
  • He hits hard enough to take out the enemy caster and heavies by himself
  • He is Genghis Khan Piggy, only Rorsh is cooler!

You get the idea from this epitaph that he's pretty good, some including myself believe that if he were in a proper faction he would break the game because he is so good... Imagine what your real army beasts could do with those spells haha.

Carver I have played for years and his dominance as my favorite 'lock has never been threatened until now... 5 games with this lady has brought some contest for my heart:

Vayl, Disciple of Everblight

What I have found is that Vayl plays quite similar to lord Carver, just she has a much much better army available to make use of her abilities!

  • She makes your stuff more accurate with Chiller, Incite and Rampager (Turn around)
  • She makes your stuff hit harder with Incite
  • She protects her army with the feat, distance is a form of armour too!
  • She makes your beasts faster with Leash
  • She is an evil ice witch with a magic ball of justice
She cant take down casters reliably, Malice and Hoarfrost are ok spells but she wont be mixing it up in melee. Legion has a far better selection of beasts and Animi to draw from and they quite frankly put the pigs in the shade; the Scythean is a new level of badass with Incite, Chiller, Leash and Slipstream, and the Seraph is possibly the finest utility beast in the game (Gorax and Bull Snapper coming close)

I have had great fun so far using her T4 Winter Storm force, I will be main listing it at the Tier Tourney tomorrow at 4TKgaming and probably for the immediate future as well, its a enabled me to compete on an even keel with some of the other great Warmachine players that contribute to this blog.

Croak Raiders and Me... a love story!

Welcome to my first article! This sacred text is some thoughts of mine on the latest minion unit to be released by PP, the Croak Raiders:

Now being primarily a Minion player I shall be focusing most of the article of their uses for the Blindwater Congregation but will offer some speculation at the end to using them with Legion as that is my latest project.

If you haven't seen them before, here are the cards for the Raiders as spoiled from LnL by Chain Attack (Missing is the cost at 5/8 and FA2):

Stat wise they are pretty quick and are decent shots but otherwise it's victim all the way. Gang and Vittriol are abilities taken from the Croak Hunter Solo, as is Advance Deployment and Immunity - Corrossion.

These are all nice but on one wound troops you are going to need a Witch Doctor to zombify them for tough to get use out of Vitriol... This is a sound plan but will then run counter to using them as a source of souls and corpses for your Sacral Vault or Swamp Shamblers as Undead denies these tokens. PP giveth and PP taketh haha so make your choice dependent on the lay of the land so to speak!

Advanced Deployment though is money on a ranged unit, it gives them 30 inches of threat at T1 with the Gourds and 32 with the Darts if you go second so you're threatening enemy AD troops or if you go first your crazy frogs are running over the halfway line ready for a strike next turn yeah.

Each frog gets to throw a single weapon; either a Gourd or a Dart due to the cumbersome rule. The trick is to lob those Gourds first to cover quite a few enemy with the oil then light them on fire with a couple of darts, then lob another Gourd at more of the enemy unit rinsing and repeating till they are either dead or on fire. Now the Gourds do no damage by themselves but will auto boost the damage rolls of the darts or any other fire based attacks that effect the oiled models... Nice! The real touch on this is that the oil lasts a ROUND so the roll for continuous fire is also boosted, this is big, this can end warcasters right there or murder shield wall troops hahaha.

In the Congregation each of the warlocks can get some use of the Raiders, most notably Barnabus and Calaban:

Barny offers swamp pits to make them immune to return shooting, Iron Flesh to bump their DEF up to a usable 16 and his feat knocks down enemy non-amphibious models making them far more likely to connect with the flames. Setting Barny up with a proper gunline is now a realistic proposition and not just a couple of Spitters.

Calaban is a surprise choice but I feel they buff his game so much! Calaban is best in tier which means no Vault so his only real source of guns to maximize his feat was Ironback Spitters... Now he has a cheap source of multiple ranged attacks that also AD and if he can land a parasite on their target it's POW15 flames and continuous fire ftw. Calaban also brings occultation which will grant stealth, great for a shooty skirmisher unit like the Croaks and when combined with tough from a Witch Doctor gives them a fighting chance. You can be doubly sure and have them wrap around an Ironback to grant them girded and immunity to blast damage as a fallback but it's often not going to happen.

Yes they provide similar benefits to the other 'locks but these in my eyes are the biggest and and most game changing... Barny gets a game plan to create a new cryx or doomreaver drop and Calaban gets a game fullstop!

There has been some talk of taking these in Legion with the new Saeryn/Rhyas unit to abuse marked for death which definitely has game, but most armies featuring a lot of fire based attacks such as Ravagores, Seraphs or Typhon will enjoy the extra layer of fury management provided by not having to boost on blast damage shots.

So for a summary, in my eyes these little frogs could possibly be the best unit in Minions, a tough order given the already excellent Posse but time will tell whether this is true or not!

Thanks for reading,

Rid

..Tyrant of the Army of the Western Reaches

My name is Sherwin, and I've been playing WMH now for around six years (I think, alas my aged memory is failing me), ever since the Mk.II release of the Forces of Skorne release. During that time, I've dipped my toes into the Minions, and Searforge Commission waters - but my true calling is for the Skorne.

I am a relatively active player in our local tournament scene, and also on occasion in the greater national scene; this year so far, I've attended Smogcon, the Welsh Masters, and the UK Games Expo Masters, with plans to play in the South East Masters and UK Masters later this year, with several local events inbetween.

From me I hope to provide some entertainment on my general musings on list building and tournament games, as well as the occasional article on painting - just don't expect the Fist or Molik Karn; I'm afraid that I'm a poor player of the latter, and like most Skorne players used the former to death in my formative years playing my faction (the first thing every Skorne player does is build a Xerxis1 Tier list, right?).

Welcome!

Welcome to Imperishable Dominion, our new blog site for Warmachine and Hordes!

We have quite a few members on the blog so will be covering a wide range of topics and areas of the games and the wider related hobby. In will let the guys introduce themselves further down this post but first a little about me...

Im Rid, ive been in the game since 2007 but only really started properly with the advent of MK2 with Khador but quickly found my true love with the Thornfall Alliance... Yes I am the primary Minion player for the blog having sizable forces of both the lunch and luggage pacts haha. I am represented in Warmachine with the Searforge Commission, but I am known as a bit of a flitter so have had smallish forces of most of the other factions at some point with the current project being Legion.

Im not the greatest player but enjoy the game, especially the tourney days to hang out with my mates and trash talk. Expect to see mostly painting articles and subfaction highlights from me.
